Record info about Westby B. Kerlin
Given Name: Westby Surname: Kerlin MI: B.
Lately I have been thinking a lot about Westley’s taking off for Kentucky. I’m beginning to wonder if he wasn’t the lone scout that I have always imagined, but rather went there because there was already some kin there, perhaps an uncle.
In 1844, Wes married for a second time, in Carroll county, Kentucky.
Kerlin Wesley B Giltner Sarah 1844 01-142 W
Kerlin, Wesley B. Giltner, Sarah 7 Oct 1844Oddly enough, a Joseph Kerlin and a Francis Giltner both appear on Trimble County Kentucky Tax List for 1837.
I'm wondering if I can get more info on this marriage.

There WERE Kerlins in Kentucky as early as the 1790 Census, even though Kentucky didn’t officially become a state until 1794. I believe it was Peter and James who were the 1790 Kerlins. My husband’s great-grandfather, Thomas Allen Kerlin, was born in Frankfort, KY in about 1818 but I have never (after 32 years of looking!) been able to connect him with those earlier generations of Kerlins. It has been the greatest frustration of my life. I know just about everything about him from the time of his marriage until he died, but I cannot find his parents anywhere. Good luck with your Kerlin research.

Hi Helen- I don’t know if you will ever pop back, but if so, sorry it has taken so long to respond to your comment. I ( blush) just noticed it !
I vaguely seem to recall an early Thomas Kerlin, perhaps from the early PA wills. It caught my attention as Thomas, like Robert, is not a common Kerlin name. Not back then.
I have a very strong feeling that Wesley went to Kentucky knowing someone already there, either a Kerlin or a Shepperd ( his first wife’s family).
Right now, I am trying to track down just what broke Robert Kerlin, financially. What business was he in ? I am hoping that early VA tax records will help.
His oldest son lived to be very old, making it right up to the census of 1880, in which he stated that his father was born in PA.
