I think that I have found Robert Kerlin, my Robert Kerlin. A search at familysearch.org for a John Kerlin, 1722, leads to a son , John, born 1752, who went forth and multiplied. While every one goes on and on about some of the sons that he sired, there, tucked away in obscurity is a Robert.
I know that I have found our Robert Kerlin. Everything fits.
But how to prove it ?

The 1860 census of Steubenville, Ohio, lists another Kerlin family : William, 58, born in VA, Cassaline, 58, born in VA and Edgar B., 10, born in VA.
Today as I was rooting around on line, I stumbled upon this : A Cassoline Brown who marries one William Kerlin. Going back in her family, what did I find ? She had a sister named Hannah who married a certain Samuel Cruthers.
Winchester, Frederick Co, VA. Next place to look.

The 1850 census does show a Hannah S. Kerlin in Mount Pleasant. Are Robert’s parent’s Willem Kerlin and Hannah Byers ? Or Robert Kerlin and Hannah Brooke ?
I have seen those combos somewhere before, but where ?

How did Henry Kerlin and Maggie Carbis meet ? I cannot find any Carbis’ listed in the records of Mount Pleasant.
And yet, they were very, very young, Henry only being 18, rather young I find, for a run down to St. Louis, to the Catholic- rather shabby, I must add- part of St. Louis. These Crothers folks seem to be very, very presbyterian.
There is another family story, one that says that all of the Kerlins were a bit… skewed…because a first cousin married another first cousin. I had always assumed that this story came from the O’Neil side of the family, until a “Samuel Crothers Logan” popped up in a search.
Where did these two meet and where was their son born ?

I have sent away to the county courthouse in Jefferson County- enclosing a few dollars more- asking for a copy of the marriage record of Jane Carothers and Robert A. Kerlin. Both sides remain vague. Unclear.
But having seen the 1850 Census, which tells us that Henry Kerlin is 12 years old and living in Ohio, and then seeing the papers that say that a few years later- at the age of perhaps 18- he is married, many questions come to mind. Like, how did he and Maggie Carbis meet ? While I think that it has something to do with her father being a steam boat mate, I can’t peg it down. And they married in the Catholic Church. Uh, just who was the Catholic ? Mount Pleasant certainly wasn’t a breeding ground for little Catholics.
Not from what I have read.
The Carbis family is not listed in the census for 1850 , not there, not then. In fact, Maggie’s sister, born in 1851, names her place of birth as Pittsburgh.
And after the 1850 census, the whole Kerlin family disappears from Jefferson Co.,Ohio.
Where did they go ?
Why did Maggie and Henry take off to the Irish part of St. Louis to get married ? And where- oh- where- was their son, Samuel, born ?
I begin to think that the rivers are the clue.

This may mean – given Robert’s place of birth being given as VA- that he might be one of these Kerlins via this link : here .
The Ohio Census also lists a Mrs. Hannah S. Kerlin as living in Mount Pleasant as well.
But for now, I must wrap Christmas presents.
