The Carbis’ In Pittsburgh, 1872

Carbis Home in Pittsburgh

One very nifty place that I spend quite a bit of time at is Historic Pittsburgh. I have spent hours and hours examining the maps there as well as the census reports. This is where I found the Carbis connection, in fact.

Right now, I have about 20 links to Historic Pittsburgh in my bookmarks, and so- before my computer crashes and I lose them all, I shall try and put some of them up. For my own reference.

Take this map, for example

Marriage Certificate, Henry T. Kerlin and Margaret Carbis

This morning, Dad forwarded some papers sent from the archdiocese of St. Louis.

The first bit tells us nothing that we don’t already know, except that- once again- confirms that the spelling of Carbis ( rather than Corbis is correct.

Gretta Dies, III

Gretta Kerlin's Death Certificate

Today I received a copy of Gretta Kerlin’s death certificate : she died of cervical cancer at the age of 32. The certificate is signed by some member of Carrie’s family, I’ve heard that she married a McKay. She did divorce Ed.

But what really surprised me was how long she had lived in California – 15 years. That means that she moved there in 1912, when she was 17, long before she married Ed Vizard of Detroit . Why did she go to California- did she join her sister, Carrie ? Where did she meet Vizard ? There are some Vizards ( including an E. Vizard listed in the S.F. 1922 directory) in the area.

And finally, why did both Carrie and Gretta move to California , to San Francisco ? Not that there is anything wrong with San Francisco, but it’s a long way from Pittsburgh. Was it because of McKay, first name not known ? Or did they have other relatives in the city?

1927 Gretta Dies

December 7th, 2004

One of the bits and pieces of papers of Annie O’Neil’s that Bucky had was a receipt for the grave of Gretta Kerlin.

receipt for Gretta Kerlin's grave

This paper raised a number of questions in my mind : what does a 32 year old woman die of ? What was she doing out in San Francisco ( visiting her sister ?) and what happened to old Ed Vizard – she is using her maiden name once more.

But mostly, I wondered what happened to the woman sitting in the car next to Ed, looking so young and happy.
