# ID: I0314 # Name: Sarah (Sallie) GILTNER

# Sex: F

# Birth: BET. 1792 – 1826 1 #

Death: SEP 1896 in Hunter’s Bottom, KY

# Note: Youngest daughter of Francis & Elizabeth Giltner, married her cousin, John, of Bourbon County, KY, thus returning to the home of her early childhood. She was a woman of positive convictions and consequently a forceful character, but possessed also in a remarkable degree a kindly, obliging and generout nature. Having no children, she always manifested great interest in the children of her brothers and sisters, and was regarded by them with an affection almost filial. Aunt Sallie (as she was called) gave to the church and to charity with a most liberal hand; nevertheless at her death, every child of a brother or sister was remembered with a little legacy.

Kerlin- Giltner

February 7th, 2006

Trying to locate an uncle or some other older relative that Wesley might have followed up into Kentucky, I looked through the 1840 census for Carroll County. Lot’s of Giltners, no Kerlins.

Then I stumbled upon this : The Hoaglands’ ancestor, Okey, married Mary Giltner, who was John Francis and Catharine’s g-granddaughter.

Okey Hoagland was the head of the family that Sarah Kerlin was living with ( right next door to H.T.) in the census of 1850.

Notes :

Cornelia’s parents were John Francis Schuyler Giltner, born March 3, 1761 in Heidelburg Twp. Leheigh,PA, died 1846 in NY. He married Otelia Yentzer. Their children were as follows:
Elizabeth, 1782
Catherine 1782 – 1811
George, 1783
Cornelia, 1787
John, 1788
Mary, 1790
Jacob, 1791
Laura, 1794,
Richard, 1796
Jane, 1800
Sally, 1804
Parmelia 1808.

I don’t have any information on Otelia parents.

Children of Johannes Frantz Giltner, Sr. (b 1716, d. 9/8/1779) and Catherine Ann Web(b)er, (b 5/28/1725, d. 1809) were as follows:
Ann Marie, 1739 – 1766
Rachael 1739 – 1766
Catherine Marie, 3/9/1739/40
Bernard, 3/1/1748/49
Jacob, about 1750
Tobias, 9/5/175
Andrew, 2/20/1760
John Francis Schuyler, 3/3/1761
John Christian, 8/20/1763
Mary Magdelane, about 1762
Margarethe, 1772
Albertina, 1776

Marriages

February 7th, 2006

Today I received an email from Dad containing scans of the information that I had requested of the Clerk of Carroll County, Kentucky.

The first is of Wesley’s marriage to Sarah Giltner.

It tells me no more than that they were married October 7, 1844 by a Methodist minister named I. Sollard.

The second is of Sarah Kerlin’s marriage to John Giltner.

Interesting point is that she is Mrs. Sarah Kerlin, and that Wesley is no where to be found after the their marriage ( read : I can’t find him on any census after 1840), and that Wesley seems to have died in 1876.

Mt.Pleasant, Ohio, 1820

January 21st, 2006

In the census of 1820, we find the following people living at Robert Kerlin’s address :

Males:

under ten years old : 2 ( I’m thinking Robert A., born 1812 he would be 8 years old and Henry T., born about 1817 would be three)

10 and under 16 : 1 ( I think that this is Westly, all indications are that he was born between 1800 and 1810) .

16 and under 26 : 1 ( William B., born 1802, 18 years old)

26 and under 45: 1 ( this might be Robert . If so, Robert is a bit younger than Hannah, who is now 47. Or this could be someone else and Robert is not home at the moment and Robert might be the older man we found in the 1810 census)

Females:

under ten years old : 1 (Sarah Matilda Kerlin was born in 1816, she is four).

10 and under 16 : 1 ( Eliza B. Kerlin, born ca 1808 she is 12)

45 and upwards : 1 ( Hannah is 47 at this point)

The last #2 on the list tells us that two people in the household were engaged in manufacturing.

Manufacturing what ?

In three years time, Robert will be dead.

# ID: I25814 # Name: Sarah Kerlin # Sex: F # Note: From Margaret Samland’s Carroll County Marriage Index. Appears in the 1850 Carroll County, KY Census at 37, living in household of Okey Hoagland. She is probably connected to the H. T. Curlin household next door. Marriage 1 John Giltner * Married: 1854 in Carroll County, Kentucky * Note: Carroll County Marriage Records Book 1-491

Hmm, there is a Sarah Kerlin living next door to H.T. Kerlin- my H.T.Kerlin- in the census of 1850. Born in 1813, Kentucky.

Of course, Sarah Kerlin might be Westley’s wife- I can’t find him in 1850 census .

Record info about Westby B. Kerlin

Given Name: Westby Surname: Kerlin MI: B.

Occupation: Bricklayer

Address: n s Market n 11th

Lately I have been thinking a lot about Westley’s taking off for Kentucky. I’m beginning to wonder if he wasn’t the lone scout that I have always imagined, but rather went there because there was already some kin there, perhaps an uncle.

In 1844, Wes married for a second time, in Carroll county, Kentucky.
Kerlin Wesley B Giltner Sarah 1844 01-142 W

Kerlin, Wesley B. Giltner, Sarah 7 Oct 1844
Oddly enough, a Joseph Kerlin and a Francis Giltner both appear on Trimble County Kentucky Tax List for 1837.

I'm wondering if I can get more info on this marriage.

Hannah’s Obit

Newspaper Index, Steubenville Ohio, 1806- 1852

Kerlin, Hannah S., Mrs.

DE, Jul 29, 1843, p.3, A10

Obituary

DIED- At her residence in Mount Pleasant, on the 21st inst., Mrs. HANNAH S.KERLIN, in the seventieth year of her age.

The deceased was a member of the Methodist Protestant Church. She embraced the religion of her Lord and Master in her youthful days, and so continued through all the vicisitudes ( sic) of life. Although severely afflicted for many months previous to her death, yet she bore up under it with Christian fortitude, and died with a full hope of a blessed immortality beyond the grave.

‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.’

Winchester, 1810

Page 11, 1810 Census for Winchester, Virginia. As is and cleaned slightly.

The official enumeration day of the 1810 census was 6 August 1810.

Males : 45 and up: 1 ( this could be Robert)
Males : 26- 45 :1 ( this could be Robert, but at most he would be 35)
Females : 26-45:1 ( this is Hannah, she is 37)
Males : 16- 26 : 1 ( no idea)
Females : 16-26:1 ( no idea)
Males : 10-16: 0

Females : 10-16: 0

Males : under 10 : 2 ( William B., born 1802, is 8 and I believe Westly to be the other boy)
Females : under 10:1 (Eliza B., born about 1808, would be 2)
From Hannah’s obit, we know that as of July 21, 1843 she was 70 years old. That hints at a birth date of sometime before July 21, 1773.

On August 6, 1810, she might have been 37 years old. Looking at the census, Hannah is the oldest female.

To Do

January 15th, 2006

Find these two deeds:

1801

October 10 : Robert buys Lot. 4 , Winchester from Groves, Graves ?

1805

October 12 : Robert buys part of Lot. 5, Winchester, from Jacob Harmer.

And look for this:

The only entry for Robert Kerlin in my book dealing with Wills of Frederick Co. VA 1816-1837 he was a buyer at the estate sales of Thomas Fawcett held 5 March 1813. You might check land deeds around that year.

There was a John Kerlin’s estate sales & executor account in 1801 & 1803, found in my Frederick Co. VA Will 1743-1816, you might try land deeds around those years.

One cannot help but noticing that Robert buys what seems to be his first piece of land right after John Kerlin’s estate sale/ executor account, 1801.

So, I need to find John Kerlin’s will or whatever that 1801 thing is. The implication seems to be that he lived in Frederick County also, so start there.
